Deities 101: Who are they and how to encourage them to come forward.

Deities/ a deity is a gender neutral word for Gods and Goddesses / a God or Goddess. There are many categories ( known as a pantheon) of multiple deities which are based on 'mythology'  or older/ less popular religions. Some are listed below for you with their associated Wikipedia pages. The most popular are Norse, Celtic, Greek, Roman ;and Egyptian.

It is also worth noting that those who hold beliefs in an Abrhamic religion, who worship one god, ("The God") are also capable of working with their god in witchcraft; as can martyrs and other individuals included within religions and pantheons that are not solely deities but held as deities by each individual.

Witchcraft belief politics.

In recent months I've had a lot of witchcraft friends saying they've been approached by other witches with regards to deities. These comments have belittled them for not having a deity/ deities to work with. So i would like to make this statement as someone who has been practising the craft a very , very long time.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO WORK WITH, WORSHIP OR CONTACT A DEITY TO DO WITCHCRAFT. IT IS A CRAFT! YOU ARE NOT LESS OF A WITCH IF YOU DO NOT WORK WITH THEM, OR IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE THEY ARE DEITIES. YOUR PRACTICE IS YOUR CRAFT. YOUR BELIEFS ARE YOUR OWN. LIKE ART BOTH ARE OPEN TO INTERPRETATION.

So be you and don't let others dictate to you what you believe in.

Rant over. Now lets get some practical information.

" I want to contact and work with a deity"

Good for you, this is usually a sign one or more wishes to work with you too.Whether this be permanently, temporarily or occasionally. Your interest is the first sign of their interest in most cases.

"What are the other signs a deity might want to work with me?"

A good question, my advice here is follow your instinct. However there are a few more visual signs.

These are:

  •  Dreams: You may find yourself having dreams with symbolism associated to a deity, or see or speak with them in a dream. Just remember that these dreams may not always be straightforward, some even obscure. The week before my cat died i had a dream where a woman whispered she wanted parsley as an offering. When i researched the next day, it turned out Persephone is associated with that herb and in some areas of Greece, parsley is left out in the sun to die as an offering to her. I bought some parsley and it died within 24 hours on its own. On the day my cat died i was able to say goodbye to her and that i love her; and had a dream about her that night which brought great comfort. I have no idea if this is true; however i believe Persephone gave me that chance to say goodbye in some way.

  • Candles: You might have a  sudden interest in a certain coloured or type of candle, or a candle you might already own might suddenly become more lively.  In this case research what pantheon and deity is associated with that candle. You can also check with a divination tool if it is a specific deity. Spirits and mystical pranksters may also play with your candles too so be wary.

  • Instinctive communication: I'm not sure how to explain this, but you may find yourself instinctively doing things for or speaking to a deity without really planning to. You might also have the sudden urge to do something or offer something that is commonly associated with a deity.
  • Contact through Divination tools: A deity/ deities may try and contact you through a divination tool.
"How do i contact a deity or encourage a deity?

Deities can not exactly be contacted via a call or email. But you can put out your energy into the universe as a little bit of a " I'm here if anyone wants to work with me" beacon. Most witches recommend meditation and using intent for this. But if your like me and your likely to fall asleep with meditation you can do this short and sweet ritual.

What you'll need: A White candle ( you'll need to be able to light this during this short ritual without leaving a sacred circle), a cleansing method, a sacred circle big enough to sit in comfortably. Optional is a crystal for Grounding/ Protection and some clear quartz.

Step one: Cleanse your space, items and cast a sacred circle around you for protection. You can use the following links to decide how you do this How to cast a sacred circle  and Cleansing

Step two: Step into your sacred circle and sit with your candle ( and crystals- if using). I prefer to sit cross legged but make sure you are comfortable and feel balanced. Place the white candle in front of you ( you can dress your candle prior to this if you like but a plain candle or one cleansed with moon water works just as well) Take a few breaths and calm yourself.

Step 3: Clap 3 times and say " This circle is guarded from ill forces, may my work be clear of all maleficent intent. So mote it be" Take three deep breaths.

Step 4: Light your candle and say " As i light this candle I welcome those who wish to work with me in my craft, who will guide and aid me ; to make them self known to me in a way i understand."

Take a few breaths and have a few minutes to think about the type of support you might need from a deity, then take another couple of cleansing breaths to re-centre yourself . Then say.

" I thank all those who have helped me in the past, who are aiding me now;and will aid me in the future. May we work together harmoniously for however long that may be. I await your sign, thank you. So blessed be"

Step 5: Clap again three times  to close your ritual and blow out your candle. Take another few moments to settle yourself and then say " This circle is now closed, my work complete. May my space, home, self and family be warded and those who wish harm be barred from us all. So mote it be". Finally take another breath, give yourself a jiggle to shake off any unwanted energy; and that's it.

You can now tidy up, cleanse your space and go about your day/night. Feel free to adapt the wording, items included in this ritual until it feels right for you. I personally like to do a little head bow after every 3 claps as a sign of respect and i like to call the elements to my circle also.
