Protection 101: Casting a Circle

Welcome to protection 101! This is protection methods when doing your craft. It's vital after cleansing before a spell to protect yourself in some way. Below is all about sacred circles!

What is a Sacred circle?

A Sacred circle has two uses. Its first use in its simplest form it is a circle of energy that protects a person during their magical or spiritual practice from unwanted or negative forces. Think of it as a filter to let the bad out and the good in.

The Second use of casting a circle is to create a space within the circle that's not quite a part of the world we live in-a space within a space that connects us to other realms and worlds so we may practice with ease and connect with the energies we will be working with.

There are many ways to cast a circle in all forms of the craft, meaning depending on your personal preferences and needs for the circle itself- there's a circle for you.

A circle from within. Visualisation!

This is a crude description/ instruction of you casting a circle using your own energy. Some imagine that this circle rotates round them at various angles, creating a globe around them and not just a circle and others imagine this circle creating a cylindrical wall of energy around them. This is up to how you envision it so doesn't force a specific image of your inner circle. Like all ways of the craft, it is personal to you.

How to cast an inner circle:   Imagine your inner spirit, your soul, your essence... your own little fire of energy that is within you. Now imagine it getting stronger and hotter and a small bright ring appearing within its core ( most imagine it to be white, gold or silver but what you see is your own), then imagine it stretching out from within your body, purifying and cleansing as it goes.. until it is no longer within you, but you within this enlarged ring... or circle.

I like to use Quartz chips.

A Marked Circle

Some practices require you to physically cast a circle. There are multiple ways to do this. The most popular ways are:

1. A salt circle.
2. Candle circles.
3. Crystal circles.
4. A drawn circle- Usually with white chalk.
5. A circle of people- Hand holding of a large group of practitioners.

But you can mark a circle with anything. My advice is to have multiple items that are similar that you can use to cast with. For example, if you identify as a Sea Witch or use a lot of water magic you could use shells, sand or other items you would find at the beach. You can also use items you have a connection with- it all depends on what your casting requires and what you want to use.
Some individuals use representations of the elements within their circle also ( such as the use of tarot cards, spell cards, candles, symbols/sigils and runes), again this is personal to you and your connections, needs and wants for your circle.

But be warned if you have pets and small children to select items that won't poison, injure or choke them. And if your casting outside in greenery avoid salt and crystals that aren't water-friendly as both can make the soil toxic and effect the plant life.

Additionally if at home- elect an area to practice and keep to that space, ensuring you section it off in use so little hands, paws, claws and mouths don't go near anything they shouldn't. This also avoids mixing too many energies in your home which can cause issues.

An Enchanted Circle- the following Circle

This is a circle that is enchanted to an item that is kept on a person for a short period of time. This is perfect for when you need your circle to be portable- like in rituals which require movement in large areas- some ritual requires dance as tribute ( or payment) for what you require from the various forces you are calling to.

So how do you enchant a circle onto something? Well, choose something that you would wear only during times you would require a sacred circle. this could be a necklace, a belt, a ring, a bracelet- ideally something that encircles you. Even a flower crown is a good candidate. You should cleanse this first before enchanting this just in case. You can also light a candle and say a few words as you enchant this item into your portable circle.

Next, you charge this item- like you would your crystals and other tools- with your intent and the item's purpose, using the same method as I mentioned for visualisation you can visualise that when worn this item's energy stretches out and encircles you- creating your own portable circle! You should do this every time you intend to use this item- to reinforce your original enchantment.

IMPORTANT!

You may think having a permanently worn circle is a great idea to protect you, however, a permanent sacred circle is to be cautioned against- too long in a space that we are not designed to live within can be dangerous to you spiritually and physically. To use a silly example. A sacred circle is like shade for a tree on a hot day. Whilst the tree appreciates and needs a bit of shade time to time to protect it from being burnt by the sun, it would slowly and painfully wilt away if the shade was permanent. So please only use a circle for it's intended -short term use.
